When composing I've always gravitated towards instrumental music, and particularly anything cinematic. One of the mighty powers of music is how evocative it can be, and how much it can change our perception of a scene.
(one of my favorite mental exercice is to replace the music of any scary or intense scene by the Benny Hill chase theme :)
